Workplace security is an important issue for employers to consider and act upon. It can be daunting when faced with security threats, but there are a few simple steps to take to secure your workplace. Some dangers are more obvious than others, but establishing a security policy is a great way to safeguard your staff and their belongings.

What constitutes workplace security?

Workplace security encompasses any measure taken to protect your staff or workplace from intrusion, accident or attack. It can be in the form of CCTV, hiring security guards, installing parking safety systems such as bollards, and creating a culture of trust and transparency amongst employees.

How to know what security measures to take

The necessary security measures vary for each kind of workplace, so the best course of action would be to analyse your office to identify any threats to security. This is the best basis for developing a security plan for your organisation. Look at entrances and exits, alarm systems, parking areas, and people’s access to your building or site. Finding the weak spots, or potentials for accidents or incidents will guide what kinds of security measures to implement.

Site and building security

Securing your building can be done in a variety of ways. Installing effective alarm systems and hiring security guards can be great ways of securing the building itself. This can ensure that anyone entering your workplace is a verified member of staff or visitor, and reduce the chance of intruders. But there are also habits that you and your staff can get into, such as ensuring doors and windows are locked effectively and not allowing unverified personnel entry to the building.
Staff must also be protected when on-site too, such as in parking areas. Utilising products such as bollards can protect pedestrianised areas like pavements, and indicate where cars can and cannot park. Having a specially designated visitor parking area is also an effective way to separate staff from clients or visitors, and can reduce the chance of someone entering your workplace under the guise of being staff.

Personal security

Staff feeling safe at work is of paramount importance, and there are a range of options to take to ensure this. Keeping areas such as stairwells, lifts, car parks and walkways well-lit and well-monitored will make staff feel protected, and ward off any potential misconduct or inappropriate behaviour. Keep these areas covered by CCTV and install emergency buttons or alarms, so that your employees know they have support, in the event of an incident occurring. The presence of security staff can also provide peace of mind to staff, particularly if they are working out of office hours.
These are a few ways that you can protect your staff and workplace, of course, each place of work is unique and therefore will require different security measures. Implementing these is a great way to improve morale and productivity amongst staff, as well as promote transparency and support in your company.
